We’ve got spirit, yes we do, we’ve got spirit, how ’bout you?

23 September 2011

Because so many of you shared an interest (or disgust!) in the Western-Norwegian tradition of eating smalahove, as mentioned in my last blogpost . . .

The following video is an excerpt from the TV show Alt for Norge (“All for Norway”) in which a group of Americans with Norwegian heritage compete to see who has the most Norwegian spirit and who, in the end, will get to meet their Norwegian relatives.

Ha en god fredag!   Happy Friday!

I actually do watch this tv-show and never find the contestants disappointing. So many interesting and nice people who travel to Norway to try and find something more about their family’s history.

The last decade or so, I’ve noticed a big increase in the number of people involved in genealogy and I’m therefore not surprised that the show got so popular in Norway.

I think it’s a nice show, but the challenges often makes me cringe. I guess I wish it would be more serious at times, but it is supposed to be light entertainment and I suppose they do love to try and shock the poor americans to do what is “typical norwegian”. Like eating ram’s testicles? Who does that? I’ve never heard of that even being a dish. I was truly as suprised as the poor americans who had to taste it.

Hi Brelle, I know what you mean about the show pretending to be “typically Norwegian” at times and then doing some pretty crazy stuff. At the same time, though, the russ episode seemed pretty on par with what I’ve seen here in Bergen! I think the show says just as much about Americans as it does about Norwegians (and who they want to believe they are as a nation, or who they want the rest of the world to believe they are!). It’s been fun to watch. Although, I’m sure as with any of these reality shows, parts are surely heavily staged and even their choice of contestants seems to reflect American stereotypes (the wealthy, giggly blonds from California who don’t want to get themselves dirty, etc.) Anyway … I’m digressing! Thanks as always for your comments!
